Oral history interview with Bertha Lazarus Breibart, 1997.

Interview begins with discussion of Bertha Breibart's early childhood in Charleston, SC. She describes her father's shoe repair business (96 King St.) and the family living quarters behind the store. Breibart mentions the distinction between Charleston's downtown and uptown Jews. Her family, of Eastern European descent, lived in "downtown" Charleston, an area more commonly inhabited by German Jews. Breibart names other Jewish families of Eastern European descent that also lived downtown. The discussion turns to Breibart's parents, Louis and Rose Lazarowitz. She describes their immigration from Russia, years in New York City and her father's socialist and union affiliations. The second part of the interview focuses on the Lazarowitz family's move (ca. 1920s) from Charleston to Summerville, SC. Breibart recounts growing up in Summerville, mentions other Jewish families in the area, describes her schooling, the family's attempt to keep kosher, and traditional Jewish dishes her mother prepared. Interview ends with an account of Breibart's teenage years (dating, social interactions), her victory in the 1935 Azalea Festival beauty pageant, and how she met husband, George Breibart.
